Some people think that students should not
be exposed to teacher's opinion on social and political issues. However, I
personally think that teachers have to give their own opinion to students with
couple of reasons.
First of all, it is important to learn social
and political issues in that age. To become an adult, it is not enough to study
what school offers in regular classes such as literature or science. What is
more important is understanding a society, which is a sum of social and
political conflicts. To understand different types of collision in society,
teacher's role is necessary since they can guide students to certain social
questions. With addressing their opinions, they can widen student's perspective
to variety of problems. For example, I still can remember one of my teachers
who did not hesitate to give her opinion. With her opinion on several different
issues from suicide to polarization problem, pupils in that class could broaden
our perspectives and this is cannot be achieved if she just asked us to focus
on our exam.
On the other hand, expressing teacher's
opinion is also an effective method to students to develop their capability of
debate, which is also required to become an adult. When the teacher gives his
or her own opinion, students not just rely on that but they propose their own
questions. During this process, students can develop their ability to question
and form their own opinion. This cannot be achieved without a teacher's
opinion, which can trigger this set of discussion. For instance, I have one of
my friends in elementary school who uses this method to offer a chance to
debate within her pupils. She said that it is interesting and surprising to see
how her students can express themselves and ask logical questions in the class.
For those reasons, I think that instructors
should be allowed to give their opinion in class. It does not always mean that
students can have same opinion with their teacher, rather it can give student a
chance to be able to become a great citizen.
