In the lecture, there is an ample support for the author's
claim that there are a few ways to keep bats from white nose syndrome. However,
the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the
author's point.
First, the professor contends that it would be useless to
stop explorers from entering caves. It is because not only people but also
other beings can transmit the disease. For example, scientists had some
experiments and proved that the disease occurred without human interaction. This
counters the reading passage's assertion that closing caves could be a good way
to prevent a decrease in population of bats because people can bring fungus
which cause the disease.
Second, the professor insists that it is ridiculous to heat
caves. To be more specific, the professor says that heat could be the reminder
for bats to wake up so that they could have time to rest. It results in death
of bats, no matter if bats have the disease, which is more negative outcome.
This casts doubt on the reading passage's suggestion that given that fungus are
vulnerable to heat, they should make caves warmer to kill fungus.
Finally, the professor argues that it is not realistic to
make vaccine and apply it to bats. The professor holds that studying takes too
long time since they should go through lots of experiments and check if the
vaccine is effective. However, spreading of the disease is so rapid. For these
reasons, they would miss the chance to save bats. This refutes the reading passage's
idea that they can make a vaccine to make bats healthy in spite of the fungus
by examining European bats which have developed immunity.
