▶ Your Answer :
Student's intellectual, social, and personal development is highly influenced by education. With this understanding, I believe that it is important for students to be encouraged to study science, technology, engineering, and math instead of studying the subjects that they are interested in. This is because studying science, technology, engineering, and math enables them to strengthen competitiveness in society and ultimately lead to a stronger economy. (Do you mean national economy?)
First, studying science, technology, engineering, and math enables students to strengthen competitiveness in society. Interestingly, a renowned social scientist in South Korea published an article in "The Korean Herald" which claims that studying science and math enables students to strengthen their competitiveness in society. The article claims that 72 percent of 200 Korean leading recruiters prefer people who studied science and math. Recruiters show such a tendency because they tend to be more creative and analytical. In a long run, creativity and critical thinking (Where does it come from?) enhance work performance. This is because today's huge problems and tasks should be processed with the understanding about science and math. This not only leads to job promotions but also ultimately enjoy a better quality of life.
Second, encouraging students to study science, technology, engineering, and math can lead to a stronger economy. Understanding the importance of human resources in a country and the potential role of education is necessary to substantiate this view. The rapid development of Korean economy is a good example. Although Korea does not have plentiful resources such as natural gases and gold, providing quality science and math education has led to rapid growth of Korean economy. Well-educated technicians such as engineers and scientists play an important role in society. More specifically, they have developed technologies like semi-conductor and electronic car. If they studied only the subjects that they are interested in, they could not be a skillful workers in their field. In this regard, I learned that encouraging students to study science, technology, engineering, and math can lead to a stronger economy.
To sum up, I believe that it is important for students to be encouraged to study science, technology, engineering, and math instead of studying the subjects that they are interested in for the following reasons: to strengthen competitiveness in society and ultimately lead to a stronger economy. Consequently, the importance of my view cannot be underestimated for the reasons I have mentioned above.
