Teachers’ responsibilities are not just teaching the materials but also guiding students to be successful in academics. One of the methods is encouraging students to be interested in the subjects to support their learning. It is truly effective to grab their interest by explaining its helpfulness in the future because they this will assist students to appreciate the practical application in the industry and they will be aware the necessities of studying. Instead of giving it up, they will put efforts to have interest if subjects are their mandatory and how they are related to a better future.
To begin with, having an interest in the subject can be achieved once they realize where the subjects are implemented in the industry. Students tend to give up the subject or lose interest if they think they are useless and meaningless. But this can be easily compensated once they observe the practical application in the real world. For example, a lot of girls avoid any physics or computer science courses because they had no interest before, but it doesn’t mean that they are not talented. They just did not have any chance to have an interest as they couldn’t apprehend its practice in the world. Most of the public schools in Toronto conducted having a field trip for each subject. This gives an idea of how the knowledge from the subject gives an impact on our society. Surprisingly, after attending field trips, there was higher rate of girls who register for physics and computer science programs. They commented that they had a stereotype that those subjects are just hard, but they perceived how computer science is used to make an iPhone or AI and became very interested in them to learn. Thus, although students have right to choose what they want to learn, it is worth to give them an opportunity to try with some interests and this can be easily done how they are really applied in the industry.
Moreover, students gain more interest when they realize how this study can give an impact on their life directly, and it is important to emphasize how much benefits they can receive from. Most of the times, as students are lack of information outside of the school, such as popular job trends or even next level of education requirements. For example, grade 10 students tend to choose easier math course, applied math, however, they are not aware that applied math is not qualified to apply most of the majors in universities such as accounting, engineering and life sciences. Once they are told by their teachers and counsellors how much help it is to take calculus, higher level, in their future university application, then they start to have interests. Also, initiating students’ interest can start from introducing them what the popular fields are these days. For instance, students hear what the 4th revolution is and what new jobs will be created, they start to have interests in statistics and computer programming for big data. Hence, teachers’ suggestion about how subjects will help them in the future to get into the school and jobs will lead them to have more interests.
To sum up, students must have interests in subjects to do well and have the perseverance to continue their studying. This can be easily achieved by hearing cases of application outside of the school. It becomes very effective once they hear how their subjects are practised in the field and how their study can play a role as a stepping stone to move forward to the next level of study and jobs. Students have fewer opportunities to fully appreciate the changes and trends in the industry and this job can be carried by teachers. Their contribution will make a distinct difference in students’ lives. |
