▶ Your Answer : These days, there is a lot of debate going on whether grades encourage students to learn or not. Either can be reasonable, but I strongly believe that grades do help in encouraging students to learn. I feel this way for two main reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
To begin with, grades are the last bastion for students to study. Without grades, nobody will study and put effort on learning something. This can be clearly shown from my personal experience. During last semester, I took a class which had an ABC grading system and also class with Pass-Fail system. On a ABC graded class, students studied very hard and focused on getting good grades. On the other hand, the other class students did not put effort in the class they took and thought of it as a free lunch.
On top of that, grades help students to feel the achievement and get a compensation for all their hard efforts. Students are encouraged to study hard and work diligently on a subject because they get a reward for it, the grades. Top students enjoy their report cards filled up with A's which is the most definite way of getting a reward for their extreme efforts. Also, with the help of this objective indicator of effort, they can get further rewards like scholarships, and other opportunities like internship offers, teaching assistant offers, etc.
In conclusion, I firmly agree that grades encourage students to learn. First, grades enforces studying, and without it, much fewer students will study. Second, grades serve as a reward for students who work hard and make those students to continuously put more effort in learning.
