The lecturer argues that the theories introduces by the reading passage regarding the reasons why several plants are folding their leaves are not plausible and contradict the facts. The lecturer’s claim does not go along with that of the reading passage which explains that the plants fold their leaves to protect flowers’ pollen from most, to conserve water and to lessen the possibility of being eaten by nocturnal herbivores.
Firstly, the lecturer claims the theory which explains the plants curl up their leaves to protect their pollen is unsufficient, because there are many non-flowering plants which also fold their leaves.
Secondly, the lecturer explains that the theory which suggests plants folding their leaves for storation of water makes nonsense, because there are some aquatic plants which live in water fold their leaves too, which definitely have noworry about dehydration.
Lastly, the lecturer refuses to accept the theory which says the plants fold their leaves to make themselves look smaller so that they can hide from nocturnal herbivores. According to the lecturer, even after folding their leaves, the sizes of the plants do not downsize dramatically enough for themselves to hide from the animals which seek to eat them. And usually those animals which activate at night do not recognize the plants by sight but by smell.
