Some people say that one's freedom should not be infringed at any time. However, in my opinion, sometimes it is acceptable to limit people's freedom for the following two reasons.
First of all, one's freedom can be limited to protect others' human rights. If someone violates other's basic human rights such as right of life, he or she should be arrested and their freedom is supposed to be restricted. For example, there was an infamous murderer in the 1990s in Korea, he killed a lot of people, men and women of all ages for no reason. He got arrested at the end, and put in to jail. This is to keep other citizens away from danger. In this kind of case, the criminal's freedom should be strongly restricted.
On top of that, soldiers may have to give up their freedom when their country is in danger. At the moment that a country is in a significant crisis, soldiers have to serve for the military to protect their people and country. For instance, in 1950, Korean War was occurred in Korean peninsula. A bunch of innocent citizens have been killed by North Korean soldiers because of the political ideology. Plenty of South Korean soldiers as well as UN soldiers left their hometown to fight against the enemies to keep their families and country safe. Their freedom and life were sacrificed and these eventually contributed to the end of the war.
To sum up, preserving others' human rights and saving a country that is under the threat of a war is really important. In this regard, I hold the position that people's freedom is acceptable to be encroached at times. |
