▶ Your Answer : The reading passage asserts that red rain occurred in Kerala can be fully explained by three theories. On the other hand, the lecturer makes counterargument with three points. To begin with, the writer contends that the blood of bats caused the red rain. A analysis of rain samples supports for this theory by the fact that it contain bat DNA. However the professor acclaims that the explanation about the blood of bats is far-fetched. This is because an experts contended that it the blood of bats had caused the red rain, 5 millions of bats should have died. However, there was no remains such as wings or bones of bats. Second, the author asserts that the red rain resulted form a volcanic eruption in the Philippines. As the dust stemmed from the volcanic eruption mixed and fell with rain, the low pH of the mixture caused it to appear red. In contrast, the speaker pointed out the red rain occurred in only Kerala. If the volcanic eruption was the cause of the red rain, it should have happened in Philippines too as well as other surrounding countries. Finally, according to the reading, chemical pollution emitted from local manufacturers resulted in the red rain. To be specific, factory chimneys without filters could be accountable because they release industrial chemical directly into the clouds. On the other hand, the professor maintains that few factories which emit chemical are in Kerala. Rather, the red rain did not occur in where factory chimneys without filters are concentrated.
