Although having a pleasant environment is crucial for all humankind, it has deteriorated in the last few centuries. That makes many people concerned about the globe and the land they're living on, which begs the question; "will the condition of the environment improve in the coming years?" Sadly, the answer seems to be "no" because developing countries wouldn't want to stop their economic growth and people in the wealthy nations couldn't bear inconvenience. To begin with, developing countries have need of exploiting their resources for their people to be wealthy. They can't do so without devastating the environment, which I think is very regrettable. For example, Brazil keep deforesting the Amazon to get raw material for industrial use. While the Amazon is called 'the lungs of the world' and the international society constantly express concerns over their behavior, the Brazil government take the risk of taking criticism. From their standpoint, they don't get instant profit by stopping deforestation. So they can't help pushing ahead with the business. On top of that, the developed countries can't scale back their immense convenience to the point where we have superior environment to the one we're in now. Can you draw a parallel between all the waste we make every day and the garbage from the poor nations that verge on naught? I guarantee that no one in rich nations could possibly forgo their expediency for the whole world's environment. The case of South Korea is a really good example. Korean government recently implement a policy that hinders supermarkets from giving away plastic bags to customers free of charge in hopes of curbing plastic waste. But a plastic bag only costs 5 to 10 cents. As you can possibly imagine, the policy turn out to be a failure. People aren't reluctant to pay the small amounts for convenience. The Ministry of Environment is struggling to come up with an efficient policy to protect the environment. But they haven't presented a clever scheme to date. To sum up, the underdeveloped countries can't let go of their economic growth and the advanced countries can't put up with inconvenience to protect the environment. In this regard, I firmly maintain that, in spite of the fact that everyone wants to lead their life in better environment, it's not quite feasible to improve it in a short period of time. |
