■ Direction You have 20 minutes to plan and write your response. Your response will be judged on the basis of The quality of writing and on how well your response presents the points in the lecture and the relationship to the reading passage. Typically, an effective response will be 150 to 225 words.
■ Question Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on the points made in the reading
▶ Topic : The origion of the Little Ice Age
▶ Your Answer :
In (띄어쓰기) the reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that there exist many possible origins explaining why the Little IceAge which lasted from the 14th to 19th century occurred. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First, the professor contends that a decrease in the number of sunspots o nthe surface of the Sun cannot bring about the wane of the amount ofenergy emitted from the Sun. According to a recent research, solar activities did not change significantly, although the number ofsunspots diminished. This plainly demonstrates that one cannotdirectly build a connection between the number of sunspots and the level of solar activities. This casts doubt on the reading passage’sclaim that solar radiation highly depends on the number of sunspots, which might have led to the decreased amount of energy which arrivedat the surface of the planet and the fall of global temperatures.
Next, the professor insists that an idea that the massive eruptions ofvolcanoes could result in the Little Ice Age is not plausible. Eventhough it is true that volcanic eruptions can greatly influenceclimates on a global scale, the period of a decrease in thetemperatures cannot be long as in the case of the Little Ice Age. Itis impossible for them to affect global climates for centuries, whichis not in coincidence with the fact that the Little Ice Age continuedfor more than 500 years. This refutes the reading passage’sassertion that the eruption of Mount Rinjani, one of the biggestvolcanoes in the world at that time, created thick layers of dust andash in the atmosphere, which served as a barricade for solarradiation to come into the Earth.
Finally, the professor argues that the global climate change at the time cannot be attributed to the increased reflexibility of the planet. Not only didglaciers and snow rise the reflectivity of the Earth, but less cloudformations due to the wane of water evaporation by decreasedtemperatures contributed to a decrease in the reflexibility. Therefore, it is acceptable that the overall reflectivity did notalter significantly during the Little Ice Age. This counters thereading passage’s suggestion that less solar radiation could bestored in the planet due to the increased area of glaciers and snowcharacterized by their high reflectivity up to 90 percent.
