▶ Your Answer :
There
are lots of index reflecting one nation’s competitivity and education is one of
them. Thus, many politicians and educators try to enhance the performances of
students by giving incentives to teachers based on their performance. Some
people even insist that a teacher’s earnings should be based on his or her
students’ performance. However, I firmly believe that teacher’s incomes should not
be decided by their students’ performance because of following reasons.
First of all,
some subjects are hard to objectify performances. Subjects like art and music
are related to creativity and evaluation can be changed by people’s viewpoint. This
is because every people have different taste of art so interpretation can be varied.
For example, when I was in middle school in 2002, I attended two different art classes
by different teachers. At that time there was World Cup held in South Korea, so
we were asked to draw poster about World Cup. In addition to using dyes on
paintings, I used printed paper of the participating nations’ flags to make
poster. I just simply cut down and attached to the paper. I got good appreciation
by one teacher that I used novel method to make my poster but the other teacher
criticized my work because she thought that I lacked ability to draw. Thus, this
example reflects that students’ performances are not always able to visulized.
Second, there
will be no collaboration between teachers when teachers getting incomes according
to their students’ performance. Co-work among teachers is important in school field
because some tasks such as school festival and sports meetings cannot be organized
by one teacher. However, if we introduce new income policy to school, it could
hinder collaboration between teachers. For example, I worked at elementary school
as substitute of my military service so I was able to how teachers react to
incentives. Every teacher in South Korean got annual incentives based on their
achievements like research or awards. I saw one teacher making complaints to principal
that how the other teacher got better grade. And next year, this teacher refused
to participate in research project, because the other teacher was also involved
in.
In conclusion,
I disagree with the idea that teacher’s salary should be given by their students’
achievement. This is because some areas of education are hard to measure
performances and it could also interrupt the relationship between teachers. |
