Everyone has had many examinations in their lives. It seems obvious that taking exams is inevitable for people to enter a university or company in our society. However, there are many side effects of exams and original purpose of exam is deteriorated into a negative way. In my opinion, the disadvantages of exam far outweigh the benefits of it. I feel this way because of two major reasons, which I will explore in this essay. First and foremost, exams force students to study only for test. Nowadays, a number of students cram for tests. The only reason of studying for them is to get good grades on their exams to enter a good university. As a result, the knowledge they obtain for test is really easy to forget and useless. Drawing from my own experience, almost all students including me used to just memorize the content of Korean history to cram for test rather than understand it. After I took a test, I hardly remembered what I studied. On the other hand, I still remember what I learned from other interesting ways of learning such as group work, writing an essay, drawing, discussion, and play. In this sense, I strongly believe that studying for exam is not effective way of learning as well as not motivating students to improve their academic interest. Secondly, I think exams cause too much bunden and a negative competition. The purpose of exams is to measure the progress of students and help them to perform better. However, exams have many negative consequences by pushing them to study for winning others. On top of that, the problem of the test is that every student is evaluated only by one exam even if they have many different kinds of abilities and skills. For example, there was a case that a teacher was arrested for leaking exam papers five times to his twin daughters who attended the same school. What’s worse, after the university entrance exam, it comes as no surprise to hear the news that a student who was under a big pressure commited a suicide because he or she was so pessimistic about his test result. Were it not for test, there would have been such tragedies in our world. For the sake of students’ well being, I think exams cannot push students to learn by pressure. To conclude. I believe exams do not encourage student to learn because exams do not provide real learning. Also exams lead to negative competition among students, The stress and pressure from exams were too much for students and sometimes cause tragedy to happen. Therefore, I hope all students will enjoy learning in more positive learning environments without stress from an old-fashioned test.
