The reading passage and the lecture both
deal with that whether the coal can be used continuously or not. The reading
provides three pieces of evidence to prove that coal can be a main source of
the national fuel from now to the future, whereas the lecture argues against it
by providing three compelling rebuttals.
Firstly, the article points out that coal is
easy to extract. It is under the near surface of the Earth. So coal can be
easily taken from the miner. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges the
point by stating that coal mining process is more complicate than we have
thought. Through the conventional mining technique, miner have limitation on
getting more sources. As an alternative to this problem, they have to buy some
state-of-the-art devices and they had better hire someone who have highly
technical knowledge in this field.
Secondly, in the reading, the author argues
that transporting coal is cheaper than other types of fuel. This is because
coal can be moved as solid form, people do not need some high-pressure
container. So transporter have lower risk for moving them. However, the
professor makes an opposing point to this argument. The professor's
point is that solid form of coal is too heavy and bulky than other fuels. So,
in transport, many number of trucks or train containers are required to move the
coal. As a result, it seems like more expensive to transport the coal than
other.
Finally, the writer goes on to explain that
coal company can create more job opportunities.
As the energy requirement increase, mining operations will need new
employees such as the maintenance of related facilities. On the
contrary, the speaker refutes the writer's claim by stating that it is not
true. To explain, their companies always want to reduce the resource cost by
decreasing the labor cost. So, in the end, as machinal efficiency improve,
company is going to even effort to decline the human work forces and to get
some fancy machines.
