The reading contends that the Maya Empire was collapsed because of three major reasons. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
To begin with, the lecturer points that it is not likely that social turmoil in the form of a peasant revolt led to a break down of Maya society. This is attributed to the fact that there is no records even though Maya Empire had an ability to write. This refutes the author's point that some destroyed temples and thrones suggest that a violent uprising against religious political authorities occurred.
Moreover, in the lecture, the point is made that it is not plausible that Maya cities were abandoned because of a sudden change to the trade routes of the region. This is because even though Teotihuacan was once a center of the trade in Maya cities, the importance of trading with Teotihuacan was diminished. This casts doubt on the reading passage's idea that the residents in Maya cities were unable to purchase many basic goods and food stuffs, leading them to relocate to other areas.
The final point made by the lecturer is that there is no evidence that Maya collapse was a result of an epidemic. It is obvious that diseases such as yellow fever and malaria spread in US previously around 16 C. This is different from the reading passage's view that diseases were outbreak and caused many deaths in Maya urban centers.
