▶ Your Answer :
Students who are just ahead of their college entrance exams spend
a vast amount of time for their motivations to attend a college. Some of them consider
the college as a stepping stone for their future career path, while others think
it as an academic challenge to satisfy their area of interests.
Most high school
students in Korea decide to attend the college in order to study their area of academic
interests. The academic interests of student reach the peak when they prepare
for the college entrance exam and look back all of their achievements in the last
12 years from an elementary school to a high school. In addition to that, they believe
that studying what they already found interesting and thrilling would be more
comfortable than working at the job with limited knowledge after high school.
However, a growing number
of students began to view the college as the most important competitiveness for
their future career. In general, high school students already establish their career
path before they enter the college. Besides, many of them are well aware of the
high unemployment rate of the Korean society and the college itself is their
potential competitiveness.
Searching for not
just which college to attend, but also which major to study, high school students
start to choose their dream jobs after the college. For example, I already made
up my mind to be a diplomat after the college when I was a (관사) senior in high school.
Given the specific career goal, I decided to attend one of the top 3 colleges
in Korea and chose Political Science as my major. Of course, the decision was not
quite related to academic interests, but merely to my career path. (문장부호)
Moreover, given recent
surge of the unemployment rate in Korea, students view the college diploma as their
potential competitiveness in the future job market. The job market for college graduates
is even separated from that for the high school graduates in Korea. Furthermore,
students who studied niche majors such as Chinese, Computer Science, and Biochemistry
are regarded as unique talents, just because they studied those.
In conclusion, high school
students absolutely want to attend college because of their future career and
competitiveness in the future job market, despite a limited number of them viewing
college as a channel to fulfill their academic interests. This is because they already
establish their career path in the high school and because the job market is
highly competitive in these days.
