In the lecture, the lecturer disagrees with
the author of the reading’s assertion that the meteorite impact is the main
reason of creating Carolina bays, arguing that the opinion from the article is
not convincing at all.
First and foremost, according to the author
of the reading passage, the oval shape of the bay is the strong evidence of
meteorites. Usually when a meteorite strikes the earth in a sharp angle, it
creates the crater which has oval shape. However, the speaker offsets this
point declaring the impact of meteorite is actually opposite. The great kinetic
energy from striking the earth is delivered equally to all directions like bomb
effect. Therefore, it makes a circular shape creator, rather than an oval shape.
Second, the speaker contends that it is not
clear that more magnetic powers are detected in Carolina Bays. To be specific,
the research was done in 1930 with primitive devices which might have had
malfunction. Furthermore, the same result is not repeated with advanced
equipment nowadays. This is in contrast to the writer’s opinion that unusual
amount of magnetic power compared to the surrounding land is measured due to
the meteorite impact.
Third, the professor from lecture suggests
that even if it is true that there are many nanodiamonds in meteorites, it is
hard to say that meteorites struck the Carolina Bays in the past. In details,
nanodiamonds can be originated from wide variety of sources. Not only fire but
also cosmic dust can be a reasonable source of forming nanodiamonds. It is in
opposition to the idea of reading that a large amount of nanodiamonds which are
found in this area can firmly support the article because these are sourced by
the meteorites.
