▶ Topic : The reading and the lecture are
both about the formation of Mima mounds. Whereas the author of the reading
states that recent research provided promising ideas related to the formation
of Mima mounds, the lecturer suggests that formations of Mima mounds are still
unsolved mystery. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made by reading
passage by providing two major points.
First of all, the reading states
that Mima mounds were built up by sediment. However, the lecturer disputes this
point. He says it’s impossible that mounds are formed by wind. Furthermore, he
mentions that dirt and rocks have variety of size and shape, so they are too
large to be carried by wind. For instance, hills by wind have irregular shapes,
but Mima is perfectly round.
Secondly, the reading states that
melting glaciers formed Mima mounds. As the temperature rose, glaciers melt. Nevertheless,
the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues Mima mounds are not a result of
melting glaciers. That’s because glaciers require specific climate conditions
such as snow and low temperature; however, Mima has wide variety of climates.
Glaciers never formed in regions, Mexico and south western United States, where
Mima is located.
In conclusion, although the reading
and lecture are about the mounds, the two major points made in the reading are
effectively challenged by the lecturer.
