Some people think that parents are the best teachers. However, in my opinion, parents are not the best teachers. There are two reasons. First, we can learn a variety of lesson from social media. Second, learning institutes can provide professional knowledge. First of all, we can learn a wide range of social phenomenon and knowledge from media. In Youtube, the most famous social platform, there are innumerable information from which we can learn. Experts from their own professional area talk about their own expertise. In addition, students can know what’s happening in other country through worldwide news in Youtube onair. Students can learn without difficulty by searching some relevant keywords. Furthermore, we can know about celebrities or ordinary people’s daily lives and experience other people’s lives indirectly. This can not only gives us useful information, but also broaden our imagination. In contrast, parents have a limited knowledge which belongs to their individual experience or their job. To give an anecdote, when I was in high school, I was confused by my Chemistry homework. So I asked that question to my father. However, my father replied that he did not know the answer because he was a Physics major. Instead, he recommended me to search Google to solve the problem. In Google, I could find a blog managed by a Chemistry graduate student. He posted several tips to solve the homework. Owing to that blog, I could finish my homework and got a good grade. If it had not been for the blog, I could not have finished the assignment. On top of that, we can learn more professional knowledge from academic institutions such as university or private educational institute. In contrast, Parents teach their children how to deal with ordinary daily lives and wisdom based on their own experience. To be specific, in early childhood, children are taught table manner and public etiquette. However, this can be taught by anyone, not only parents. In addition, as children get older, they naturally acquire this manner by imitating how other people behave. The thing is, although this lesson is valuable, it is general compared to specific knowledge provided by academy. For example, children can learn Chinese in academy and prepare for HSK test. However, they cannot learn Chinese from their parents if they are not Chinese and Chinese major. This indicates that parents can give their children limited lesson. To sum up, social media teach children broad knowledge and academic institutions teach children professional knowledge. Therefore, I firmly believe that parents are not the best teachers. |
