I am writing to seek admission to your prestigious institution, the University of Chicago to study Financial Mathematics. I have had a strong passion for Mathematics and I believe that the educational background that I have gained within the course of my work coupled with my strong drive and passion for Mathematics as a subject will enable me to become successful as a student in your institution. My greatest motivation for studying Financial Mathematics at your institution is built on the great responsibility to further develop my talents in the application of mathematics into the one of the most practical academic field: Finance.
To advance my cognitive and practical knowledge for the increasingly complex world of financial markets by integrating mathematics I believe. I truly found it imperative for me to further study the application of mathematical tools like numerical integration into the finance field.
This motivated me to aim to build a career as a sophisticated financial professional to ensure that I would be in a position to offer financial comfort to my family; this would gain me the associated respect as the head of the family. The great expectation that was placed on me led me to develop a strong passion to succeed in my studies and ultimately in my career.
‘Don’t find fault, find a remedy’

My confidence has always been great as relates to issues of problem solving and the problems that require the application of both analytical and mathematical skills. My passion and interests for mathematics is consistent with my favorite quotes above where I love to find alternative mathematical solutions in the most systematic settings in financial mathematics. The motivation is clearly shown by the grades that I have been able to attain in the course of my studies; I managed to attain ‘A’ grades in all calculus courses, Theory of Numbers, Combinatorics as well as Statistics and Probability. My favorite class in the course of my studies was Combinatorics as it involved the use of permutation and combination to determine the probability of finding solutions to problems. I achieved ‘B’ grades in six courses that were related to Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; this is one of best institutions that offer Computer Science in the world over. There were several important courses that gave me the theoretical background to succeed in the course of my studies; the unit on ‘Data and Structure’ prepared me to use the programming language C++ effectively. The unit on ‘Theory on Computation’ helped to prepare me to be a creative thinker and to understand the use of concepts and models related to mathematics in computation.
My performance in some of the courses were however affected by a change of schedule for some of the courses which I had to undertake as my girlfriend got pregnant in my senior year and I had to take responsibility; this affected my performance as I had to travel to South Korea for medical treatment and I even missed some of the classes. As a result my performance in the last semester was not that good; the grades especially for the Probability Theory Class were affected substantially. My strong academic background, which has enabled me to acquire invaluable skills in Mathematics and Computer Science have laid the basis for me to be able to Study the Financial Mathematics program at the University of Chicago.
I have also had experiences in business and investment which are an important component of Financial Mathematics; I was able to practice personal investment in the Korean Stock market for a period of three years. I acquired the knowledge on trading stocks from the stock news and the related books; currently, I own and trade Korean stocks that are worth up to $15,000. My motivation to consider the options for the future were inspired by the Greek Default incident which led to a decrease in the KOSPI points from 2100 to 1700; this led to a loss of jobs and some companies even went bankrupt, however some people also benefited positively from this incident as some gained as much as 50 times from their investments in the Put Option which appears a very attractive investment by my own terms.
I have also had some invaluable work experience in the field of financial management; currently, I work as a financial manager for the Han-min Co. Ltd which is a trading company that deals with imports from China. Currently, the company imports more than 100 varieties of goods from China to the Korean market. As a financial manager, I have the responsibility of managing the currency risks and predicting the unexpected market price by analyzing the statistical information. This experience has built my confidence and led me to seek more knowledge in financial mathematics.
My future goal is to develop a career as finance professional to be able to analyze asset pricing and develop existing derivatives of financial programs. After gaining the requisite experience and stability in economic terms, I intend to pursue further studies in the field of Finance and Economy and to ultimately become a professor of Finance and Economics. I am thus applying for admission to the University of Chicago; Chicago is the second biggest city in the U.S. and at such it would provide my family with a good working environment. The Financial Mathematics program in the University of Chicago lays more emphasis on the mathematical interpretation of finance which is a critical factor the achievement of my goals. Despite being a one year course, I will be able to undertake fifteen courses on Financial Mathematics and this greatly appeals to me in relation to my goals and objectives. I look forward to being admitted in your institution and pursuing my dream career of choice in Financial Mathematics at the University of Chicago.
