안녕하세요 그린입니다.
오늘은 저번 칼럼에 이어서 라이팅 문법 유형에 대해서 알려드리려고 합니다. 이 칼럼이 SAT관련 내용으로는 멘토 활동 마지막이네요. 지금까지 읽어주셔서 감사하고 도움됬으면 합니다 :)
Standard English conventions - 문법 문제들로 44문제중 25개 정도로 적지 않은 분량을 차지 합니다. 그래서 문법 개념만 정확히 알고 문제를 풀면 많은 문제들을 맞출 수 있습니다. 이런 문제들은 표준 문법, 용법, 부호에 대한 문제들이 있습니다. 보통 이런 문제들은 지문의 맥락이 크게 중요하지 않고 문장만 보고 풀 수 있습니다.
Concision
저번 칼럼에서 얘기했듯이 SAT에서는 표현이 짧으면 짧을 수록 좋아합니다. 풀어서 쓸 수도 있지만 가장 간결하게 많은 단어들을 사용하지 않고 원하는 내용을 다 전달하는 것이 중요합니다.
Redundancy - 반복 내용
틀린 보기 중에서 같은 내용을 반복하는 부분들이 있는 보기들이 있습니다. 이런 보기는 보자마자 삭제하시면 됩니다.
The stock market might repeat its drop and rise pattern again - repeat과 again이 “다시”라는 내용을 두 번이나 뜻하기 때문.
She studies Spanish every morning right after she wakes up every day. - every morning과 every day.

Semicolon (;)
The shops were closed; I couldn’t buy anything. - 두 독립절
I studied for the SAT for two years; my score was above a 1500. - 두 독립절
The state department completed three assignments: diplomatic talks, led by an expert; a meeting, lead by an assistant director; and a state visit. - 리스트 품목에 콤마가 있다.
독립절 ; 종속절 (X)
The shops were closed; when I went. (뒤에서 독립절이 아니다)
콤마 오류 (comma splice)
Semicolon이 들어갈 자리에 콤마를 사용하는 잘못된 쓰임. 두 독립절 사이에는 semicolon만!
이 오류를 고치는 방법은 semicolon이나 period를 쓰는 것입니다. 아니면 접속사를 콤마 다음에 추가하면 알맞게 수정할 수 있습니다.
Alex bakes brownies in his own recipe, they taste great. - 오류!
Alex bakes brownies in his own recipe; they taste great.
Alex bakes brownies in his own recipe. They taste great
Alex bakes brownies in his own recipe, but they taste great
Colon (:)
문장 뒤에 목록, 설명, 예시, 뜻/정의를 나타내기 위해 쓰입니다. 무언가를 알리는 경우.
colon의 앞에는 독립절이 와야합니다.
Here is my list of acceptable pets: dogs, cats, and fish. - 리스트
My desire for a perfect pet was met with the man’s best friend: a dog. - 정의
(인간의 가장 친한 친구는 무엇인가? 개이다.)
Consider lobsters, for example: with age, they only get stronger. - 설명
Dash (-)
대쉬는 콜론(:)과 같은 역할을 합니다. 독립절이 앞에 와야합니다.
대쉬는 괄호같은 역할도 합니다. 문장에 꼭 들어가지 않아도 되는 부연 설명을 나타낼때 씁니다. 이럴때는 꼭 양쪽에 대쉬가 있어야합니다 - 괄호처럼요!
You were right - he did eat the whole thing. - 콜론 역할
The hair stylist picked up the scissors - the sharp blue ones - and started to cut my hair. - 괄호 역할

Faulty Modifier
한국어로는 “수식어구”라고 하는데 SAT에 오류가 있는 수식어구 문제들이 많이 나옵니다.
예를 들어
Despite having finished her test, the teacher did not let Jenna go to the bathroom.
앞에 있는 수식어구가 콤마 다음에 있는 주어를 수식해줘야되는데 위에 문장을 보면 “시험을 끝낸”이라는 수식어구가 선생님 앞에 있음으로 틀린 문장입니다. 시험을 끝낸것은 선생님이 아니라 Jenna 이기 때문에
Despite having finished her test, Jenna was not allowed to go to the bathroom.
이렇게 문장이 바뀝니다.
After 7 hours of studying, Mary’s brain felt fried.
공부를 한 것은 Mary의 뇌가 아니라 Mary니까 (Mary의 뇌는 공부를 할 수 없음)
After 7 hours of studying, Mary felt like her brain as fried.
이럴때 수식어구의 내용이 누구/무엇에 대한 것인지 집중해서 봐야합니다.
Comma (,)
3개 이상의 것을 나열 할때
apples, bananas, and kiwis
두 독립절이 접속사 때문에 연결 될 때 접속사 앞에
She is beautiful, and she is funny.
접속사 (FANBOYS) for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
한 문장을 시작하는 종속절 뒤에
While taking the SAT, I was nervous.
문장의 흐름을 잠시 중단하는 단어, 구, 절 등을 분리 할 때 / 보충 설명
Lily, a new student, was nervous on her first day.
Mary’s new bag was, in fact, from a designer brand.
***that이나 문장에서 빠지면 안되는 구에서는 안 씁니다***
Parallel Construction
리스트에 나열할때 품목의 형태가 다 같아야합니다.
The couple bought the tickets, arrived at the theater, and they sat down in their seats
Bought/ arrived/ they sat down - 은 형식이 안 똑같아서
The couple bought the tickets, arrived at the theater, and sat down in their seats 으로 수정해줘야 합니다.
Painting your bedroom requires picking a color, measuring the walls, get the right tools, and buying the paint
Picking/ measuring/get/ buying - 다 ing으로 끝나는 형식인데 get만 혼자 다르니까
Painting your bedroom requires picking a color, measuring the walls, getting the right tools, and buying the paint으로 수정해주세요.
Apostrophe/ Possessive
Singular noun - 단수 명사 = ( ‘ + s ) = dog’s (개의)
Plural noun - 복수 명사 (끝이 s) = ( ‘ ) = dogs’ (개들의)
Plural noun - 복수 명사 (끝이 s가 아님) = ( ‘ + s ) = children’s // geese’s
Singular Proper - 단수 고유명사 = ( ‘ + s ) or ( ‘ ) 둘다 가능 = Dickens’ // Dickens’s
Plural Proper - 복수 고유명사 = ( ‘ ) = Harrises’
False Comparison
문장 안에서 무언가를 비교할때 같은 것을 비교해야 합니다.
사람-사람 // 책-책 등등
A의 무엇을 B의 무엇에 비교할때
That of 단수
Those of 복수
Any other____
I like Stanley’s apples better than Cora (스탠리의 사과가 코라보다 좋다) 사과와 사람을 비교 할 수 없다
I like Stanley’s apples better than Cora’s (스탠리의 사과가 코라의 사과보다 좋다)
For astronauts, the moon is easier to get to than any other space object.
주어와 동사의 일치 (Subject & Verb Agreement)
The chef cook lobster and fish.
셰프라는 단수에 맞는 동사 변형 - cooks - 가 있어야 맞습니다.
The chef cooks lobster and fish
My math teacher, who is extremely demanding and yells at all the students, give too much homework.
콤마 사이에 있는 내용을 완전 배제하고 보면 도움이 됩니다.
My math teacher give too much homework. Teacher이라는 단수에 give는 맞지 않죠.
My math teacher, who is extremely demanding and yells at all the students, gives too much homework.
Changes for the new and improved SAT is going to be implemented soon.
가장 앞에 있는 주어를 보는게 중요해요. SAT는 단수지만 주어는 SAT가 아니라 앞에 있는 Changes. Changes는 변화들이라는 뜻으로 복수이기 떄문에 복수 주어에 맞는 동사가 필요합니다.
Changes for the new and improved SAT are going to be implemented soon.
이렇게 라이팅 영역에서 필요한 문법 개념을 정리해 봤습니다.
긴 글 읽어주셔서 감사합니다
