Dear ***,
Congratulations! It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been recommended to the Rackham Graduate School for admission to the Ph.D. program in Physics at the University of Michigan for Fall 2004.
I am also pleased to offer you full financial support-in the form of a Physics Department Fellowship, combined with a quarter-time Graduate Student Instructorship (GSI)-for the 2004-2005 academic year. These departmental fellowships are reserved for top students and provide financial support without requiring a full regimen of teaching duties. As a result of this reduction in teaching load, it is expected that you will 1) have more time to advance more rapidly in your studies, and 2) have the opportunity to engage in active research at the earliest possible stage of your graduate career.
Since records indicate that English was not the primary language of instruction at your undergraduate institution, you will be required, as part of the preparation for assuming a GSI position, to satisfactorily complete a workshop on English language classroom communication, and to pass an oral English test of classroom language competence. In the case that you are not immediately certified to teach, however, the Department will support you with an interim, non-classroom instructional appointment-for no more than one academic year-while you undertake the necessary training to become a classroom instructor. The criteria used to determine exemption from futher training/testing is based on the following criteria: 1) an undergraduate degree from a U.S. college/university or 2) an undergraduate degree from another institution in which English was the primary medium of instruction.
===> GSI(?)
As you make your graduate school choice, you may also wish to know the following information about your funding package: The combined stipend and GSI salary is based, in part, on the negotiated salary for student instructors. The current monthly stipend for students with this support package is $1,696.50 In addition, your tuition will be paid, and you will be eligible for some staff benefits, including comprehensive health insurance and instructional staff library privileges. The typical duties for a quarter-time instructorship require no more than ten hours per week of work - usually including the teaching of two laboratory sections (four contact hours), grading students' work, and holding weekly office hours. As a GSI, you will be expected to register for and maintain a minimum of six credit hours (usually two courses) per semester.
This financial package also guarantees summer stipend support (for summer 2004) in the form of matching funds when you obtain a quarter-time summer research assistantship. The Physics Department intends continued support in your second year-provided you are making sufficient academic progress. This support can be in the form of a GSI appointment, a GSRA (Graduate Student Research Assistant) appointment, or a combination of the two. In recent years, all Physics graduate students have been fully supported throughout their Ph.D. studies.
Please also consider this: If you have applied for and are awarded an external fellowship (such as through the NSF), the Physics Department, together with the Graduate School, will supplement your monthly stipend for the duration of the external award.
With this offer, we warmly invite you to join us. The University of Michigan, and the Physics Department in particular, provide a vibrant and exciting research environment. In fact, the University of Michigan has the largest federal research budget of all U.S. universities, excluding those associated with national laboratories.
The Physics Department strongly supports its traditional areas of excellence including Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (AMO), Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Condensed Matter Physics. In addition, we support a wide variety of multidisciplinary programs including Complex Systems, Applied Physics and Materials, Biophysics, Medical Physics, and Space Physics. Our AMO group is associated with two large interdisciplinary research centers: The Optical Physics Interdisciplinary Laboratory (OPIL) and the Center for Frontiers in Optical and Coherent and Ultrafast Studies (FOCUS). We have established leading roles in both CDF and D0 experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and a remarkable synergy of experiment and theory in Condensed Matter Physics. More recently, we have established the Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics to strengthen our efforts in theory. Our 65,000-square-foot Randall Laboratory provides the facilities both for cutting-edge research and the training and education necessary for graduate students to pursue physics.
Salary, tuition waiver, benefits, working conditions, and other employment terms are governed by a Union contract-negotiated between the University of Michigan and the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO). To become a member, you must authorize a deduction of Union dues from your paycheck. If you choose not to become a member, a representation-service fee equal to that of dues will be deducted from you pay (as long as the Union maintains 50% membership among graduate student instructors and staff assistants). Union members vote on contract negotiations; non-members cannot. Authorization cards are available from your department steward, the Office of Student Services, the Graduate Student Assistantship Program Office, or GEO (734-995-0221). All new graduate student instructors are required to attend a workshop on teaching at the University of Michigan. More information regarding this workshop will be available in June.
Our offer is good through April 15, 2004, as agreed upon by the Council of Graduate Schools, so please return the enclosed reply before then.
Once again, congratulations.
Sincerely,
Note: There will soon be a "hard" copy of this letter mailed to you that will enclose the reply form.
