Some people think that learning to read and write has lost importance as time passed. However, in my opinion, I think that learning to read and write has become much more important than ever. This is because most of the information provided today is stored as writing, and helps people to save or transfer information easily.
To begin with, most of the information that we access is written. To be able to understand and use this information, one must be able to read. If people are unable, they will not have enough understanding about the state of the world around them, and make it difficult for them to get jobs. For example, I have met a person, who did not know how to read. He was a very smart person, but because he could not read, many companies rejected his offer to work for the company. The person could only do jobs as cleaning the streets, and emptying trash cans. But after he started learning how to read and write, the person obtained more knowledge, and finally was able to get a job in a well payed company.
On top of that, people use writing as a method of saving and moving information. In the past, people had to talk to people directly in order to hear what the other person wanted to say. But after people started to read and write, they were able to leave messages, and the receiver could read the messages any time he/she wanted. For instance, many of the stories we here today have come from ancient people who told the story to their children, and these children to their children, and so on. By this way, modification could happen in the original story. However, some stories were engraved in stone, or carved in to clay tablets. These were left to be read by many people, and because we can read, we are able to read the story and lessons left by people from the past.
To sum up, most of the information that we access is written, and people write messages to save or give information to someone. Because of this, I think it has become more important to be able to know how to read and write. |
