In the lecture, the speaker insists that
Chaco Canyon is hard to be considered as a residential area, a place to stock
grain maize, and a ceremonial place. First of all, the theory that Chaco canyon
could be used like an apartment is not supported by the interior of the
instruction. Chaco Canyon has only few fire places inside which could serve
only about 10 families, and it has not enough rooms for 100 families to live
in. For the second assumption that the building could have been a stock for
maize, there is no related evidence remained. For example, if the place was
used for storing a great amount of maize, there would have been some spill of
the grains as well as containers for them. However, in Chaco Canyon those
evidences are not found. The third theory that Chaco Canyon may have been a
ceremonial place because there is a Pueblo Alto nearby with many broken pieces
of pots is also implausible. In the mound of Pueblo Alto, there are not only
the remains of pots, but also many materials such as stones and sand for
construction. Even broken parts of construction machines are found occasionally
in the mound. So, it is considered as a pile of construction trashes, and the
pieces of pots could also have been put there by construction workers who had
meal in the place. Therefore, with these doubts or evidences, the great
building Chaco Canyon could not have been a place to live in, store food, or do
rituals. |
