"Few rich men own their own property. Property owns them." My father used to repeat this proverb. He always wanted to alert me from being blinded by worldly desires. Now that I became mature enough to realize the hazard of money, I understand his view point. Although we cannot deny the fact that money is as important as other factors that compose our life, I wouldn't choose salary as the priority when it comes to deciding a career. Doing enjoyable work is more important than earning a high salary. I take this point of view on account of the productivity and health, both mentally and physically.
To begin with, if I just do a job that gives me a lot of salary without passion, I will not be able to lift my ability to the fullest potential. Passion is the driving force of improvement. People tend to concentrate better when they do things that they like. On the other hand, a company sould not expect a development while they have employees without any passion or endeavor. For example, I myself had an experience of doing a tedious job just for the sake of money. Last summer, I had a part time job at a fast food restaurant, which I didn't like very much. However, I needed some money to pay tuition to an institute. The result of my work was devastating. Neither myself nor the supervisor was satisfied with my work. Thus, I could learn the importance of one's passion and eager for accomplishment.
On top of that, I would choose a job that is enjoyable instead of a job that earns a lot of money for my physical health. Usually, companies that give a lot of money demand a lot from their employees. It is a strategy some major companies use, since majority of the workers hesitate to quit the job if they earn a lot of money even though they are swamped with heavy workload. Samsung, one of the leading enterprises in the world, is a good example. They also gives a lot of money to their workers but at the same time demand a lot. However I wouldn't want to ruin my health by doing jobs overnight. I wouldn't want to spend the money that I've earned for my medical bills either.
Furthermore, it is apparent that doing a job that is not enjoyable would destroy my mental health. Typically, we spend a lot of time at our work place. That means what we do and feel at the workplace influence us a lot. Doing things that one does not enjoy for all day long would be really stressful. For instance, according to a survey done by Ulsan University, majority of the workers polled that they sometimes feel stressful about their work. Again, I wouldn't want to live a miserable life by spending most of my days doing things that I do not enjoy. This is another reason why I think doing enjoyable work is more important than earning a high salary.
To summarize, for the sake of productivity and my health I wouldn't hesitate a minuit to choose a job that I enjoy, no matter how much money I could earn. With passion, one will be able to make a good accomplishment even though that job might not bring a fortune at once. |
