There are a lot of controversy over whether a child's success in school is more influenced by his parents than his peers. Indeed, parents usually guide and encourage their child. However, I believe that classmates are more important impact on a child'success in school. This is because a child is encouraged to study harder from his friends and develops social skills with their peers.
To begin with, a child is motivated to study harder with his friends. This is because a child is exposed to competitions in school, trying to win over other students. Therefore, a child puts more effort in studying which leads to his success in school life. For example, when my parents told me to study harder and get better grades, I did not listen to them at all. I didn't know why I had to study so hard. However, when I found out that my friends were all studying hard to achieve their goals in life, I was began studying not to fall behind them. I started to pay attention in class, do my homework on time, and work my best to pursue my dreams. This clearly shows that peers play a significant role in a child's success in school.
In addition, a child learns to develop social skills through interacting with their classmates. It is common that students spend most of their time in school. By taking same classes and participating in sports, such as soccer and basketball, with classmates, students learn to cooperate and broaden their social network. For instance, my younger sister who was home-schooled until 9th grade was a very quite and shy girl. She did not talk much to even her family members and was afraid of meeting new people. My parents were really concered about her. However, when she went to a public high school, she began making new friends, and became one of the talkative people that I have ever known. She made lots of friends by taking part in sports clubs, and her friends from school helped her overcome her problems. In this regard, friends are more influential than parents in terms of having successful school life.
In short, a child's peers play a pivotal role in his success in school than his parents. Not only does being with peers enable a child to be motivated to study, but also they help him develop social skills. |
