it's more important to give students prizes or awards for student's effort than achivement(achivement > effort) |
In our society, there are lots of way to evaluate an individual's ability to decide which person will be given price or reward. Like our society, the most frequently used method of evaluating at our school is to compare each of achievement by students because it is the best way to figure out how hard students are studying during the semester. Therefore, it is natural that teachers are following this rule to evaluate their students.
First of all, what is the most important in study is how efficiently students spend their time in studying not how much time students make their efforts. As our society requires people who make the greatest achievement with spending least of time, students should be also equipped to the ability to succeed in reality. For example, there are two friends whose name are Emy and Brian in my class room. Even though emy always spend lots of time for studying, she has never won brian in grade who always seems to hang out with his friend. The reason way emy's method of studying is not efficient at all because she doesn't focus on lecture but she always studied hard after class. According to a research conducted by Korea university in 2006, 85% of the teachers at high schools responded that they prefer to give award or prize to students whose achievement is significant even though they don't seem to make lots of effort. Of course, some people say that it would be unfair if ordinary students have to compete with talented students who don't need to spend much time for understanding the subject. However, the portion of those students are extremely low and also just ordinary students can catch up with them.
Second, it is hard to measure how much students make exactly so that achievement is more likely to be standard that decides which students is better or not. For example, measuring how much time students spend in studying is almost impossible for teachers because there is no way to observe their life after class. Research conducted by Time magazine in 2007 illustrates well the reason way teacher tend to evaluate students with their achievement in that more than 75% teachers responded that they can't afford to figure out which students are devoting themselves to study because they are already too busy dealing with any other thing. On the other hand, some people maintain that there are some kind of students whose effort is not directly connected to their grade. However, measuring students' effort doesn't seem to be reasonable way at all in that there is no way to ask students how much effort they have made.
To sum up, there seems to be no replacement method instead of evaluating students' ability by achievement which means 'grade'. Even though their achievements dont' always indicate student's exact ability, it is necessary way for teachers to evaluate them. |
