친척들이 예전에 비해 덜 중요해졌을껄? |
This is what happened when I was ten years old. My family usually visited home of my relatives living in a long distance twice a month. However, today, my family visits them twice a year. This is common sight throughout my country. Hence, I agree that the extended family is less important than in the past time because of the traffic jam during holidays and the poor economic situation of 1990's in my country. First of all, it is impossible for my family to visit my extended family frequently because the heavy traffic jam during a big holiday when most of the people in Korea usually move toward their own destination to meet their relatives. For example, on one long vacation, New years, my families always tried to see my extended families, although it took about five hours to get there, which was also very difficult for my families. However, nowadays, it mostly takes about ten hours to get there. It is two times over in the past New years. There is no mistaking the fact that it is affected by heavy traffic jam during the period of New years. From time on, my families are not visiting them frequently and naturally the relationship with them is becoming distant more than before. Thus, I am strongly believed that bad traffic condition during holidays makes it possible for the relationship of many families with their relatives to be distant more than in the past time. Furthermore, when my country, Korea, was in the depression of 1990's, most of the people could not afford to think much about their relatives, which, in turn, caused the association with their relatives to discontinue as close as before. This economic situation also had a bad influence on my father's business. When I was 8 grade, my father's business went bankrupt so that it made it necessary for my families to concentrate on only making a living. Also, my families could not afford to visit my relatives in a long distance because we were working hard even in New years. More importantly, we had not enough money to go there. These situations took place throughout my country. Therefore, It is sure that the depression of 1990's in Korea makes most of people's relationship with their extended families not as close as before. |
