The lecturer contends that three explanations
in the reading passage are not confirmed. This casts doubt on the reading
passage’s claim that there are three plausible explanations about the origin of
the remains of Iron Age forts built build with vitrified stones that are vitrified.
To begin with, the lecturer argues that the
explanation that vitrification was caused by signal fires does not match evidence.
This is due to the fact that there were only a few signal fires at the walls of
the forts. As a result, the reasons why all stones of the walls are vitrified cannot be
explained. This contradicts the argument in the reading passage that signal
fires can be the cause of the vitrified rocks.
On top of that, the lecturer asserts that
the explanation that vitrification was caused by lightening is problematic.
This is attributed to the fact that the walls are very large and long. Moreover,
it seems impossible that lightening stroke the same spot over and over. This
counters the claim made by the author that lightening can be the cause of the vitrified
rocks.
Lastly, the lecturer insists that the
explanation that volcanic rocks were used to build the forts has no evidence. This
is because people who built the forts used local materials, but there were not
volcanos near the forts. In addition, it was impossible to move such heavy rocks. This
refutes the author’s argument that using volcanic rocks can be the cause of vitrified
rocks.
