▶ Your Answer : There are many factors that make one
university a 'good' one, such as high-quality equipment, good faculties, and efficient
curriculum. This is why there are so many controversies when the budget of
universities is determined. Many people believe that by hiring famous
professors, students can get more education of high quality. However, I
strongly disagree with that idea. I believe that universities should spend more
money on improving facilities. Having good facilities can give all students the
opportunity of education, and also there is a reduced role of professors these days. To begin with, high quality of
facilities can ensure the opportunities of education for all students. There
are many facilities that are still not enough for students, or that do not
consider students who need special care. For example, many students voice out
their opinions about the lack of seats in library or the number of shuttle buses.
These small problems make students uncomfortable and cannot focus on studying,
eventually leading to students' loss of the right for education. Especially in
exam terms, students have difficulties finding appropriate places to study. By
spending money on expanding libraries or increasing the number of shuttle
buses, the universities can solve the problem of discomforts of students. Also,
many classrooms in universities include stairs, which make it impossible for
handicapped students to take the courses they want. When signing up for
courses, students in wheelchair should consider the place they are held, not
their contents. So, by investing money, universities
can also ensure right and opportunity for education of those students who need
extra care. Furthermore, the role of professor
in classes is getting reduced. In the past, the professors were the ones that
motivate and inspire students, being their role models. However, as the number
of students increase and many types of class has been developed instead of
simple lecture, the portion that a professor takes in a course is small
nowadays. For instance, there are 'flipped classes' where students learn new
materials through video lectures before class. In the classroom, most of the
time is spent in debate or discussion of students. So, the professor is the one
who arrange the discussion and give simple advices. In other words, since it is
the activity that does not require the fame of professors, the universities do
not have to spend more money on hiring famous professors. In conclusion, considering the
guaranteed right and opportunities of students for education and the reduced
role of professors, universities should spend more money on improving
facilities rather than on hiring well-known professors.
