The lecturer and reading passage are both
talking about the orb design. The passage believes that orb web is the most
suitable design for spiders. However, the lecturer believes that it is
unjustifiable.
To begin with, the author argues that
widespread trait of the orb web proves its effectiveness. Nevertheless, the
lecturer disagrees with this argument by mentioning an example of black widow
spider. Some spiders like black widow spider stopped using orb web and, currently, only harness cob web. This shows that orb web is not the optimal
option for all spiders.
Secondly, the reading passage claims that the vast surface with little use of silk makes orb design useful. However, the
lecturer casts doubt on its effectiveness by saying that the web can be easily
torn. This makes the spider to reconstruct new web almost every day, which is
bothering job for spiders.
Lastly, the author mentions that at the
center of the web, it is capable for a spider to naturally notice where prey has
been captured in the web. However, the lecturer believes that this can make
spiders more vulnerable to other predators. Since birds also know that spiders
spend most of time at the middle of the web, they can easily attack spiders.
