There might be some people who believe that a teacher’s ability to
connect with students is vital. However, I personally disagree with the above idea
for two subsequent reasons. First, teachers’ the most important role is to
educate students. Second, teachers who lack knowledge are not viewed as
authority figures by their students.
To begin with, the primary role of a teacher is to educate students.
Teachers who are professional about their subjects can teach students
effectively, which is the most important duty of teachers. They have a great
impact on not only their students’ ability to study but also their future. Take
an example of my story, the teacher who influenced me the most was my history
teacher in high school. Even though I didn’t have a special bond with the
teacher, I learn more in his class than I did in any other. Because he was
specialized in history, he was able to teach the subject effectively and also
provide students with a lot of information that was not included in textbooks.
Thanks to him, I realized my concern about the history and decided the history
as my university major.
On top of that, teachers who do not have sufficient knowledge can not
have authority in their classrooms. If a teacher’s understanding of the subject
is limited, the students in the class will question his or her authority and
will not show respect. For instance, my sixth-grade teacher could not answer the
students’ questions well and often made mistakes when he taught difficult
concepts. The students often ridiculed him and refused to follow his
instructions. If he had demonstrated that he had a lot of knowledge, the
students would not have questioned his ability.
In conclusion, the principle function of a teacher is to provide
students with information, and teachers need to show that they fully comprehend
the subject to take their authorities firmly. In this regard, I clearly believe
that having sufficient knowledge is more important than being able to interact
with students.
