Some people take it for granted that it is
better for a college to invest in improving facilities such as libraries,
computers, or labs for students than hiring famous professor. In my opinion, I
absolutely agree with this statement. The rationale behind this is that
improving facilities helps students to study efficiently and the school to
attract capable researchers.
First of all, universities can increase
students’ learning efficiency by creating favorable conditions. To explain,
upgrading infrastructures of a school, ranging from a spacious library to a
cutting-edge laboratory, provides students with comfortable and pleasant
surroundings for their research and studies. Thus, this motivates them to
improve themselves and make great efforts to their own majors. As an example,
my younger brother, Dooley, was not interested in his major which was computer
science, when he was in college. He told me that his school had only outdated
computers which made him difficult to run most programs he needed in class. Besides,
the school library was too shabby on its building and usually cramped with many
people to focus on studying. Thus, this was the reason why he was indifferent
to the computer engineering. On the contrary to this, while studying in
graduate school, he changed the negative attitude about the field of the study
to positive one, and soon afterwards he felt a genuine interest in it. This is
because Samsung, a leading IT company in Korea, funded Dooley’s school to a
great degree, enabling it to replace the out-of-date computers to state-of-art
ones, but also rebuild the old and small library into a pleasant modern-style
one. Therefore, Dooley was extremely satisfied with these things from the
company’s investment, which encouraged him to study hard for his major.
On top of that, most excellent researchers
are strongly inclined to work for a college which is equipped with newly
improved facilities. To be more specific, it is true that outstanding graduate
fellows favor a university which has cutting-edge experimental equipment, a
clean lab environment, and an up-to-date library, all of which are helpful to
both of their experiments and research. With the support of these, they are
engrossed in their professional work, leading to developing better expertise as
well as getting deeper knowledge. As a result, they can write plenty of
creative academic papers that enhance the school’s reputation to a great
extent. For instance, a few decades ago, Harvard University in the United
States, struggled to attract renowned professors, exceptional students, and
skillful researchers for its graduate school. However, nowadays, the university
enjoys its fully changed situation that a lot of these kinds of people have applied
for the admission of it for their academic progress since last year. This was
because the administration of the Harvard decided to spend a huge amount of
money freely on renovating old-fashioned scientific research facilities in
addition to upgrading outmoded experiment apparatus. Consequently, such decision
let the appliers not only notice the Harvard University’ changed educational
environment, but also feel like entering the Harvard University.
In conclusion, although some argue that it
is reasonable for a college to endeavor to hire famous faculties, I firmly
believe that a school should make improvements on important components
concerning study and research, like libraries, computers, or labs. The
compelling logic behind this is that investing in these things brings better
study efficiency to its students and a great fame to the university in the end. |
