Some people think that providing grades doesn’t promote learning. And they insist that scores makes students stressful. However I disagree with them for two reasons
First, Evaluation makes people to know what they need to fix. Providing grades make students know their state, it means that score indicate what students already know, and what they have to know. So, giving grades can provide students feedback. In my case, when I was in high school. I was not good at math. I understood all concept in textbook, but it was hard to solve difficult problem. I gave 80 scores and I found the problem of mine. I was week in one concept actually. And I reviewed that chapter. Then I could get higher scores in next exams.
Second, providing grades promotes competition. Grades can students compare each other. So it makes students competitive. Actually, competition is a good thing. It promotes us to acquire more knowledge. For example, a study was conducted by Seoul University to determine whether grades could affect intellectual achievement. There were two groups monitored. The first group was formed of people who could access other student’s scores. They were asked to take same exam for 2 times. The other group consisted of people who couldn’t know other student’s scores and were given the same direction. The researchers compared the outcomes and recorded that the first group were able to achieve score better than the second group. This is because first group can compare themselves with other students. And they recognized other students for competitors. This study demonstrates that grades can be useful to improve students’ intellectual ability. To sum up, providing grades is needed because it can realize students’ real state. And it can promote competition which is healthy and useful to develop people’s ability. In this regard, I firmly believe providing a student with grades promotes learning.
