▶ Your Answer : Some people might think that children should play sports for fun rather than for competiton. However, in my opinion, it is better for children to play sports focusing on the competition rather than on having fun. This is because playing sports to compete and win against other children would enable children to develop their physical abilities much more effectively, and it is hard to find many opportunities for children to learn about teamwork, except for playing sports.
To begin with, by competing with other people in playing sports, children can improve their physical abilities considerably, compared to when they just play it for fun. If children play sports for winning against other people, they would play it very hard, putting a lot of effort into it, which requires a lot of energy consumption and many vigorous activities. This can make children's physical abilities improved very much than when they just play it for fun and do not put much effort into it. They would be able to enhance their stamina, increase muscles, speed and agility, and so on. According to a research conducted by the University of Texas, children who had played sports focusing on the competition than on having fun showed much higher improvement in growth of their physical ability, including stamina and agility, compared to ones who had played it mainly for fun. Children who had played sports for fun mainly showed less active appearance in participating in the sports, and this led to slower growth rate of their physical abilities compared to ones who played it very hard to win against others.
On top of that, playing sports for competition would provide children with cherished opportunities to learn and enhance their teamwork ability. For children, there are many options to play for fun, including chatting with other friends or playing computer games. However, few of them would provide opportunities for children to learn and enhance their teamwork ability. Children who usually spend most of their time in attending schools, studying, chatting with friends, and being with family do not have many chances to learn how to do teamwork with other people. However, if they play sports with their friends or other people for winning against their opponents, they would try to cooperate with them to win at the competition. And this would make them learn how to do teamwork with other people. For example, until I was firstly in my middle school, I did not play sports for competition. However, since I entered into my middle school, I tried to play sports to win the first prize at the tournament of our school which was held when I was a freshman. To compete with other brilliant teams, including senior students, I and my classmates practiced together to make our teamwork much more improved, so that we could win against much stronger team than us at the tournament. As a result of our efforts to improve our teamwork, we could win at the tournament by beating other much stronger teams consisting of excellent players or teams of senior students.
To sum up, children can improve their physical abilities much more effectively by playing sports focusing on the competition rather than on having fun, and by playing sports for competition, children can learn teamwork. In this regard, I think that it is better for children to play sports for competition rather than for having fun.
