▶ Topic :
The following appeared in a memo from the director of a large group of hospitals. "In a laboratory study of liquid antibacterial hand soaps, a concentrated solution of UltraClean produced a 40 percent greater reduction in the bacteria population than did the liquid hand soaps currently used in our hospitals. During a subsequent test of UltraClean at our hospital in Workby, that hospital reported significantly fewer cases of patient infection than did any of the other hospitals in our group. Therefore, to prevent serious patient infections, we should supply UltraClean at all hand-washing stations throughout our hospital system." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

▶ Your Answer :
According to the author, he/she states that their hand soap,
UltraClean solution, produced a 40 percent greater bacteria reduction than the
liquid hand soaps. However, the article has couple of misleading assumptions
that would cause serious bias.
First of all, he/she states that it has 40 percent greater
reduction in the bacteria population than the hand soaps that they currently
use. According to the assumption, because it significantly reduce a harmful
organisms, their hospital system need to use the UltraClean solution in order
to prevent patient infections. However, the argument has is faulty. The purpose
of having a low patient infection is an important reason but the author needs
to explain more about the UltraClean solution, meaning that the recently
invented liquid soap needs more credibility such as government approbation that
this product is secure to use. Although the product might have a high rate of
reduction, it might be harmful for children and elderly to use them since their
skins are more vulnerable.
Secondly, the author mentions that hospital reported
significantly less cases of patient infection than any other hospitals. According
to his/her lines of reasoning, since they have lower patient infection in
hospital, it is for the sake of their hand soaps. However, his/her reasoning
can be wrong because it is based on the doubtful assumption. His/her presumption
is that all people using the UltraClean have less probability of getting
infected. Assuming that the hand soap is the only reason they have fewer
patients infected is a definitely a biased assumption that excluding all other
facts such as the hospital might have daily cleaning while other hospital does
one in three days.
Lastly, the author assumes that hand washing prevents
serious patient infections. However, his/her presumption might be faulty. According
to the reasoning, once the hospital provides the better hand washing supply,
they can prevent serious patient infection. However, this assumption is based
on a dubious fact that having better hand soap can clean up every places in the
hospital. For example, people in the hospital are usually more sensitive than
normal people since they are suffering from disease. Therefore, they usually
prefer to have plain odor or odorless products. However, having not mentioned
significant reasons that people will definitely use the hand soaps is moot.
In conclusion, there are couple points the article is misleading
readers. To be more persuasive, the author needs to articulate the product does
not cause any harmful effects on patients, to mention
