In the magazine, the author assumes that the level of people's fitness will be recovered when economic condition is bounce back to the normal stage. At first glance, this assertion may seem convincing; however, the assumption make it unreasonable for some reasons.
First, the author assumes that the overall fitness level of people has been downgraded since twenty years ago in which one-half of people could met physical standard whereas only one quarter do in present day. It is true the number of shaped people decreased initially however, the author should suggest more specific data, such as social trend or people's priority of daily life. For instance, people in twenty years ago might put more importance on their physical ability than other activities while the trend in today's society is something more sedentary than work out. Consequently, the number of people whose physical traits meet the standard will not increase even economy is improved.
Another assumption the author makes is that the computer has no bearing on lower level of fitness since the highest level of fitness is in the region where the largest number of people have their own computer. Perhaps the reason why the region maintains the highest ownership of computer is that it has many office buildings in which people owns it but utilize it only when they need to. Therefore, the author should comment on the degree of usage of computer rather than the ownership.
Lastly, the author assumes that the people stopped spend their money on fitness reflects after economic downturn and they will resume to exploit their money on exercise if economy is get stable again. This does not guarantee people will re-start to work out after the bounce back.
In brief, the author's assumption is unconvincing in many aspects. To strengthen the argument, the author should provide more detailed data such as people's predisposition for both past and present and how many time people make use of their computer. |
