Some people insist that it is better for students to learn a
second language in primary school rather than secondary school. I totally
disagree with this opinion, since I believe that the disadvantages prevail over
the advantages.
Several people say that teaching students a foreign language
in a primary institution can have a significant positive effect on their foreign
language learning ability in the future. This is because this education method
would make them be so familiar with a foreign language that they would not be
reluctant to memorize foreign words. Moreover, it is said in the media that the
younger children are, the faster the pace of getting used to learning a foreign
language is. (이 부분을 더 앞으로 보내주셔야 위에서 했던 말을 효율적으로 설명할 수 있습니다.) Therefore, it is clear that the measure may play an important role
in improving children's second language usage level.
However, there are two major demerits that should be highlighted
rather than the merits mentioned above. Firstly, the education of an additional
language in primary school would lower the mother tongue usage levels. Since
children are not completely familiar with the grammatical structure of their
mother tongues in general, learning that of the second one different from the
first one too early can make students confused. In addition, it can put
pressure on them to study too (too 의 경우 이 글에서 자주 쓰인다는 점을 제외하더라도, 어느정도 구어체에 가까운 표현이라 바꿔주시는 게 좋습니다.) many study materials, as they should spend much time
memorizing plenty of words.
In conclusion, although teaching primary school students an
additional language is a great way to encourage them to be interested in it, I
insist that the drawbacks of it outbalance the merits, since it would be
extremely difficult for too young students.
