With fast paced technological development,
some argue that humanities subjects in universities are no longer effective for
career prospects. Although engineering and science subjects are becoming more
important than before, I disagree with this opinion, as we will discuss below. <(good)
On the one hand, it is true that fast paced
changes in industrial structures tempt us into taking up engineering or science
subjects rather than humanities. There are more vacancies provided by
technology companies, and such companies tend to provide better wages, perks
and working environment. Also, increase in a level of automation leads us to
have more interests in science and engineering in order not to be a passive
worker whose position could be taken by machines.
However, humanities subjects are still
working from the angle of career prospects. Firstly, humanities are now playing
a role to find future technologies for many companies. For example, Google
employs a number of humanities graduates to anticipate what people would need
in the future. The CEO of this company said that through the view of the
humanities, they expect to find out potential needs that could be solved by
technologies. Secondly, humanities are also crucial subjects for media and
vernacular industry. With the global economic development, those industries are
becoming important sources for profits. Thus, humanities such as literature
have an advantage for such an industrial job position.
In conclusion, although engineering and
science subjects are more highlighted for job prospects, I believe humanities are
still important to take up in university for job careers in other industrial
fields such as the media, and even technology companies need humanities
graduates.
