Traditionally, most of occupations were dominated by a particular gender in accordance with stereotypes and social expectations. Some people argue that this tradition has to be continued as each gender has own pros and cons. However, in my view, occupational segregation by gender is considered unreasonable system in modern society as it brings numerous negative effects to the society. To begin with, fundamentally, gender inequality in job opportunities is gender discrimination which creates sensitive issues such as gender wage gap or unfair advancement opportunity. The liberty of choice has given to all members of democratic society, thus individuals have right to choose their professions according to their aptitude and interest. However, if job candidates are ruled out from career opportunities just because of gender, this seems to be going against the trend. Therefore, for the realization of an equal society, gender discrimination in the labour market should be banned.
Furthermore, it is meaningless to expect job applicants to have traditional features of a particular gender as characters of each gender have been neutralized with time. It has been current trends to express individualities rather than being a typical female or male. This has allowed individuals to initiate careers once dominated by opposite gender. For instance, nowadays, it is often seen a female pilot, CEO, and an heavy equipment operator in construction sites. In addition, occupations used to be only for women: kindergarten teachers. makeup artists, and nurses are also becoming popular among men. To conclude, like above, it seems unpractical and irrational to exclude males and females from certain specialized jobs. Although strengths and weaknesses of each gender cannot be entirely ruled out, fair opportunities should be given to all job candidates regardless of gender. |
