There are controversies over whether homework affects the way children improve a sense of creativity. Some people argue that obligation to children prevent them from awaking their creativity, but I would like to provide the counterargument on the basis of ‘responsibility’ we should learn from early ages. First of all, there is no doubt that doing homework has both negative and positive aspects to children. In the case of former, doing homework given by teachers allows children to stay indoor rather than outdoor. Furthermore, in retrospect the history of human society, the significant creation stemmed from not an obligation, but spontaneous work or activities by accident. In this context, the argument of some experts that doing homework is one of the barriers for children to improve their creativity looks like reasonable. Consequently, they tend to believe that the period of young ages should enjoy their time with nature in place of textbooks. In contrast, according to latter, doing homework can be seen as a promise in a small society. I think that the reason of existence of the school, in particular to young ages, is closely connected to learning society, not receiving a good grade from teachers. This is because most people should live in a particular society regardless of their will. In other words, we should comply with orders in order to make harmony with other people in the shared space. From this respective, I argue that doing homework is a process of learning society which is constructed by responsibilities of members. Therefore, children could realize the importance of promise with teacher and colleagues by doing their homework. In conclusion, even if I could partially understand the side effect of forcing children to do homework, I believe and argue that homework can play a significant role in educating children with respect to ‘responsibility’. |
