Learning a foreign language at primary school has both advantages and disadvantages but its drawbacks outweigh its benefits. This is because children have not fully developed their own language skills at such a young age and learning a new language in this stage might be confused them.
To begin with, if children start learning new languages at primary school, they can learn faster since young children are tend to learn fast and adapt new things well. For example, according to a recent study regarding the issue of the perfect age to learn a foreign language, it is revealed that younger age is better because they learn and improve language skills faster. Moreover, since their ability to mimic the pronunciation is better, children can learn accurate pronunciation compared to teenagers so that they can speak more fluently and naturally. Biologically, children's brain is more open to the new sound and patterns and this can be the great advantages to improve foreign language skills faster and clear. This shows that learning a new language at a younger age has a lot of advantages in terms of accepting it faster.
However, it is evident that there are tremendous drawbacks in learning new languages at a young age. This is due to the fact that children might be confused between two languages, and this might harm their language development. In such cases, it might limit the children's language developments such as vocabulary in their mother tongue, making confused them from one another. Moreover, they might feel burdensome when they have to learn a different language, which can be totally different from their mother tongue. This might result in feeling reluctant to study foreign languages due to a lot of stress. This demonstrates that learning a foreign language in elementary school has far more drawbacks since if they do not try to learn a foreign language, they would not benefit from above-mentioned advantages of learning a new language faster.
All things considered, while there are some advantages to learning a new language such as learning fast and speak naturally, it is evident that there are far more disadvantages to learning a foreign language like getting stress and confusion.
