Modern man is living in a
flood of advertisement. All the media that we are exposed everyday life are filled
with advertisement, even on the movies and tv series man can easily find the
indirect advertisement. I believe this overflowing advertisement plays a rather
negative effect on people.
Firstly, people have to face the advertisement
not only from all the imaginable media, but also from random walls or signs on
the street. In this case, it is possible to say that people hardly have the
right to select what kind of advertisement they want to see. Then, the idea of people can be driven in a very narrow-minded way. For example, if a child sees a tv commercial about plastic surgery continuously, the child can unconsciously consider it in a good way without filtering. Then he or she can be
easily leaded to a wrong or too extreme standard towards beauty, and further, the self-consciousness about his or her own looks.
Secondly, the advertisement can limit the
customer’s right to choose. It is natural to feel familiar and reliable from a
brand name we see every day. So if there is a big company running a big amount
of advertisement, people would be brainwashed easily and they would be ended up
losing the chance of choosing the product from its function and usefulness. For
example, extending the discussion to bigger circle of market, if there is a company using the money on donation and supporting
social activities rather than putting more commercials. This company would
eventually be ignored from the customers because of a lack of commercial
exposure.
As I explained above, there could be a lot of
negative aspect in advertisement. But we still need to remind ourselves that if there are proper regulations
controlling the downside of advertisement, it can be a good factor stimulating
the consuming and in the end the market itself. |
