Some people think that social skills as important as academic qualifications. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is often said that some qualities like social skills have the same degree of importance of academic requirements. However, I partly agree with the statement above in that having such skills or academic requirements can be dependent on what occupations people have.
On the one hand, it is true that social skills are one of the most indispensable elements in our society where we live and communicate with others together at schools and workplace. In my opinion, doctors can be a good example of this. To have the occupation, potential medical students are required to have a certain degree of high educational requirements, but it is not all about being a doctor, who cares for and listens to patients, and work with co-workers such as nurses, in the field. Accordingly, communication skills in particular, one of the social skills, is one of the essential qualities along with a degree of medical qualification.
On the other hand, I think it can be different from the fields where people are involved whether social skills are more necessary than educational degrees. For instance, scientists, who are required to devote a great deal of time to discovering and verifying to make contributions to the different industries in our society, spend by far more time on studying in a very specific area rather than on focusing on social relationships, which means that it is scientific knowledge and understanding that are the key factors of what they have accomplished instead of communication skills. Technology advance and medical and scientific developments are the fruits of efforts by scientists whose academic knowledge has contributed to.
In conclusion, I accept the idea that social skills is of importance to the same extent of academic qualifications, but I believe it differs in which area people are engaged.
Thank you!
