In the modern societies, it has become a trend for young populations to have a gap year for travelling or working before they start further studies at university. However, several controversies and debates have come up regarding this trend since it has the both positive and negative aspects. From my perspective, the benefits coming from a gap year outweigh its drawbacks, and the bases will be discussed in the following paragraghs.
On the one hand, there are those who are convinced that having a gap year would disturb further studies at university. To elaborate, during the gap year, they would forget what they learned from high school, resulting in having difficulties continuing studies. With rational thinking, when it comes to the flow of study, having a gap year away from continuous studies doesn't seem efficient.
However, it can be noticed without difficulty that having a year between studies can broaden views of young people. To illustrate, the experiences that young students gain from working in certain areas that are based on their preferences, would lead them to choose what to study at university. Moreover, by traveling during the gap year, they can become more independent than when they are in high school, and this would help them to be more responsible and mature as grown adults.
Those aforementioned statements are considered as the clear benefits of having a gap year. Although continuing further studies without any blank seems important, there are possibilites that young people would choose wrong majors to study without a focused aim based on the experiences that gain from the gap year. In this regard, having a gap year can be considered as the necessary and practical period after high school graduation.
In conclusion, based on the arguments mentioned above, I have finally come to understand that while the dark sides of having a gap year are observed, it brings more helpful effects to young people. Therefore, I think the advatages outweigh its drawbacks.
