The table illustrates how the class size and the number
of primary students in Britain changed from 1998 to 2002. It also shows the
number(as well as average class size) of pupils who were studying in a
small(with 30 or less) or in a large(with 31 or more).
To begin with, between 1998 and 1999, the number of
students in small class in Britain was about 14500 to 14358 each, representing
a slight decrease but stable from around 72% of students to 70% of that. During
this period, the large class demonstrated less students number and
percentage(from 5840 pupils, 29% in 1998 to 6153 pupils, 30% in 1999) than the
small. There was also a rise slightly while its total average class size became
around 26%. (25.9% in 1998 and 26.1% in 1999 respectively)
Over the next 3-year period, as seen from the table,
there were significant an increase and decrease. In 2002, thr smaller class
pupils had a huge growth by reaching at 22193 students number with 99.3% of all
students. On the other hand, the large one had a considerable fall around 156
students number and 0.7% of all students, showing total average class size at
24.5%.
In conclusion, the number of large primary school class
in Britain declined, while smaller increased much more. Therefore, large
percent of pupils chose to study in a small class.
