The below both tables describe the sales figures of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas
among five different European countries in the years, 1999 and 2004.
Overall, the sales volumes of Fairtrade-labelled coffee among five
different countries in Europe increased substantially in the latter year whilst
there were only three countries, Switzerland, the UK and Belgium where bananas
sales increased.
In the first year, the coffee sales in the UK
were about 1.5 but it rose dramatically to 20 million euros in 2004 and that
figure was the most significant increase compared to others. Furthermore,
Switzerland’s sales exactly doubled in 2004. Interestingly, there
were slight increases of 0.2 million in Denmark and Sweden respectively over
the given period. Belgium was in the third position in terms of the sales
increase of Fairtrade- labeled
coffee.
There were remarkable trend changes in the
second table with going up and downs on the Banana. In particular, Belgium’s
figure was the most rapid surge and growth with about a 7-fold increase and
ending up with 4 million in five years. Subsequently, the sales data between
the UK and Switzerland were about more than five times and three times increase
each at the end of the year. In contrast, the sales volume of Sweden was a
slight decrease of 0.8 million and Denmark’s one was down from
2.0 in 1999 to 0.9 million in 2004.
