Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be take into account when deciding on the punishment.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Some people assert that to fix punishments according
to the kind of crime is better, while others insist that the decision of punishments
should be based on various situations and motivations of each criminal. In the
essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and suggest my own one.
A number of people maintain that fixed punishments
for each kind of crime is fair for social justice rather than different punishments
considered by other factors. They say that it is impossible to understand all circumstances
and motivations of numerous criminals. This is because it is extremely hard to judge
and figure out all complex situations of crimes so that it would take a lot of
time and money to check them and make a decision. In addition, criminals could tell
a lie in order to cover their real motivations, when they are investigated.
Although this opinion is somewhat reasonable,
I believe that same punishments for same kinds of crime would be unfair under
the unequal socio-economic circumstances. For example, people under the poverty
line are likely to steal food from supermarkets, while rich people might commit
these kinds of crimes for fun. The latter should be strongly punished to make
them recognize the lack of a sense of morality, but it is more important for
the former to help them improve quality of their lives not to encourage them to
commit same crimes again.
In conclusion, I believe that punishments for
various kinds of crime should be different based on the specific backgrounds of
criminals and their intentions because it would be more beneficial to prevent
them from commiting the crime.
