There could be a heated debate over whether
demanding high school students to be involved in social work is desirable or
not. Despite the merits it might incur, I agree that there would be more
drawbacks of the work. In this regard, I will write this essay concerning my opinions.
To begin with, some advantages are presented
by the proponents of the compulsory programs, that is students can broaden
their minds beyond studies by communicating and socializing with citizens
living in their neighborhood. Considering that human beings are social animals, it is essential to know how to share the talents or abilities they have. Even though they
are mandatorily asked to do such things as mentoring younger children in need or
helping the elderly living alone, these experiences can provide a sense of
achievement to students which might promote them to continue with voluntary
service.
On the other hand, some people argue that
compulsory community activity could negatively affect students. As can be seen
from the word ‘volunteering’, it is not an action that someone can require students to
do. In case they were asked to do unpaid charity work, teenagers might only
focus on finalizing things rapidly with no responsibility or lessons learned.
In addition, there are not many places where they can actually offer a rewarding experience to young students. For example,
all my fellow students did for improving neighborhood was visiting nearby
police office and cleaning the place for about 10 minutes to get an hour certificate, which could be meaningless in a
way.
In conclusion, even though there are some
merits to develop students’ sociality, it can have many more side effects and can be another burden
for students who are suffering from loads of school works. For these reasons, I
think schools should not force students to do volunteer work.
