In modern society, it is true that an increasing number of people use their private transport to commute and get around. In this trend, some cities designate vehicle-free days. There are both merits and demerits, but I strongly believe that positive aspects certainly override negative aspects.
On the one hand, of course, there are several drawbacks. Firstly, if private cars, trucks, motorcycles are prohibited, and people are encouraged to use only public transportation, serious congestion can occur. In rush hour, there are already so many commuters that it is hard to take the subway or bus. In this situation, if people who originally used private transport are added, existing passengers of public one could experience significant inconvenience. Secondly, this can be one of violations of rights. Vehicle owners payed just price, so they have the right to use their car whenever they want. From their point of view, prohibiting using their own car can be considered as unfair.
On the other hand, it is undeniable that great benefits also exist. Citizens can save money by not buying expensive fuel but using cheap public transportation. Moreover, decreasing of individual cars on the road, it is possible to reduce CO2 emission. For example, according to a research, there was a two-fold decrease of CO2 in vehicle-free days. In addition, this day is effective to make traffic jams and traffic accidents decline. On a normal day, actual vehicle numbers exceed acceptable numbers by road so that many troubles can happen. However, through regulating private automobiles, these problems can be solved.
In conclusion, I opine that banning private transport on specific day can cause more advantages than disadvantages. Therefore, when cities execute this kind of project, they should earnestly consider these effects.
