Some nations across the world are pressuring elderly workers to postpone their retirement. However, this defeats the purpose of the existence of recommended retirement age because they are not capable of working efficiently above a certain age. Thus, I strongly believe workers should retire at an appropriate age. Admittedly, many jobs in modern day society require precise skills. This is only achievable after gaining vast experience, which means older employees who worked for a longer period are more likely to be professional. Medical surgeon, for instance, is an occupation where it requires extremely accurate skills and a deep understanding of the body. Hence, the average age of surgeons is around mid-50s, whereas the average retirement age in Australia is roughly 65. As a result, it is inevitable for surgeons to be encouraged to extend the time that they can contribute to society and save more lives. Older workers are experts in the field, so we need them to construct a better world. However, aging does not always result in positive outputs. They will eventually experience a decrease in work efficiency and reduced quality of the result due to aging disabilities, such as hearing problems, chronic diseases, dementia, etc. Certain fields, such as fashion design, for example, are enormously sensitive to trends which is tough for aged designers to adapt to. In addition, people closer to retirement age are more vulnerable to illness caused by stress. Studies have shown that one of the most common causes of a heart attack is stress, and it happens frequently in elderly people. Therefore, it is wiser for older workers to retire for the industry and their health. In conclusion, most specialists are relatively older because they have developed skills and experience over time, hence it is beneficial for society to increase the time they work. On the other hand, it will be difficult for them to work with physical hardness and the potential likelihood of sickness. We should appreciate their contribution to society and carry their legacy. |
